Meall Uaine

The walk up Meall Uaine from Blairgowrie takes you through proper highland scenery - moorland, scattered pine, that particular shade of green you only find in Perthshire. It's not a brutal slog either, more of a steady climb that rewards you with decent views across the Tay Valley without requiring Alpine Club membership.

At 839 metres, this isn't a mountain that'll feature in your climbing memoirs, but that's rather the point. Walkers after a solid afternoon outing without the commute to Ben Nevis will find this fits the bill nicely. You get genuine ridge walking near the top, a bit of scrambling if you fancy it, and the kind of panorama that makes you actually stop and look rather than just tick a box.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your pace. There's no marked path in places, so basic navigation skills help. The moorland can be boggy in wet weather - which in Perthshire is fairly often - so decent boots aren't optional.

It works well as part of a broader hill weekend. Glenshee Glamping, just five miles away, gives you comfortable digs without the tent wrestling, and puts you within striking distance of other Cairngorms walks if you're building a longer trip. Go in autumn when the heather's still decent and midges have buggered off. Summer can be a bit midge-heavy if you're unlucky.
