Black Hill

Standing at 744 metres, this modest Perthshire summit delivers proper mountain views without the usual Highland trek. The climb from the nearest car park takes about two hours, winding through heather moorland and past scattered rowan trees that blaze orange in autumn.

Walkers with decent fitness will find the ascent rewarding rather than punishing. The path can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots are essential. From the top, you'll see across to the Cairngorms on clear days - though like most Scottish hills, Black Hill keeps its best views for those patient enough to wait out the mist.

Families with teenagers who enjoy proper walks will get the most from this one. Younger children might struggle with the distance, and there's nothing much to see for the first hour beyond moorland. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - a small cairn marks the top, but it's the 360-degree views that make the effort worthwhile.

Blairgowrie sits just to the south, making this a decent day out if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around the area like Nethercraig or Gallowhill. Allow half a day including the drive up, and check the weather forecast. Scottish hills can turn nasty quickly, and this one's exposed to the worst of it.
