Meall nan Doireachan

The walk up Meall nan Doireachan isn't going to blow your mind with views, but it's a solid afternoon outing from Strathcarron if you want to bag a Munro without the crowds. At 982 metres, it's perfectly pitched - high enough to feel like proper achievement, low enough that you won't be wrecked by lunchtime.

The route itself is straightforward moorland walking. You gain height steadily through heather and grass, with the Torridon mountains doing their thing off to your left. The summit's a bit bare and windswept, which means the views actually open up rather than disappoint. On a clear day you can see across to the Applecross peninsula and down towards Loch Carron.

Walkers will find this one genuinely worthwhile. Families with teenagers who've got decent boots and don't mind three or four hours on their feet should manage it fine. Anything younger and you're looking at a slog without much payoff at the top - it's not one of those peaks with a loch or dramatic corrie to keep kids entertained.

Allow four to five hours return from the car park near Coulags. Weather changes fast out here, so go properly equipped. The nearest solid base is Shieldaig Camping & Cabins, only 6 miles away, which makes this an easy day out if you're spending a few nights in the area. If you're mixing Meall nan Doireachan with other Highland walking, you've picked a location that works well - Torridon's peaks are close enough for the serious hikers, but this one's decent enough that you don't need them to have a proper day out.
