Meall Moraig

The walk up Meall Moraig is a proper little workout, but the reward justifies every step. This 804-metre peak sits near Ardgay in the Highlands and gives you views across to Ben Wyvis and down the Strath Carron that genuinely take your breath away - though that might also be the climb.

It's not a technical scramble. The path is clear enough, though it gets steep in sections and can be boggy after rain. Allow three to four hours for a round trip, and go early if you want any peace - this one's popular with locals who know its worth. The summit's a rocky platform with proper 360-degree views, which makes for cracking photography in good light.

This is squarely one for walkers and hill baggers. Kids can manage it if they're reasonably fit, but younger ones might find it a slog. Weather matters enormously here - cloud descends fast in the Highlands, so an early start on a clear day is essential.

The nearest town is Ardgay, where you can pick up supplies before heading out. If you're basing yourself in the area, Ardgay Glamping sits less than five miles from the trailhead and makes a decent spot for a night or two. Most people will allow a full morning or early afternoon for this one - it's not a quick tick-box summit. Worth doing if you're in the region and the weather plays ball.
