Meall Glac na Daraich

The walk up Meall Glac na Daraich from Gairloch takes you inland from the coastal sprawl, climbing steadily through moorland that shifts from green to brown depending on the season. It's not a massive peak - around 2,600 feet - but the views back towards the Torridon mountains and out to the Isle of Skye make the effort worthwhile. Most walkers allow two to three hours for the round trip, and you'll want decent boots given how boggy things get after rain.

This one appeals to hillwalkers who know what they're doing rather than casual strollers. The path isn't always obvious, and visibility can close in quickly, so it's not the place to wander off track. That said, once you're up there the panorama is genuinely good - on clear days you can see for miles across the Highlands. Families with older teenagers who enjoy a proper hike will get something out of it, though younger kids might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak.

Free to access, naturally. The nearest accommodation, Sands Caravan & Camping just 1.4 miles from Gairloch, makes a solid base if you're working through the peaks in the area. Combine this with walks around Gairloch itself or push further afield to the bigger hills. Go in summer or early autumn - winter conditions here turn unforgiving quickly.
