Meall Dhamh

There's a proper hill walk waiting for you just outside Arrochar, and Meall Dhamh isn't going to win any beauty pageants - it's a straightforward Scottish peak without the drama of Ben Lomond down the way. That said, the walk up offers genuine views across Loch Long and into the Arrochar Alps, which is well worth the effort if you've got a spare three to four hours and sturdy boots.

The ascent itself isn't technical but it's steep enough to remind your legs why they were working. Most walkers will find the path clear enough, though it's hardly a manicured trail - bring waterproofs regardless of what the forecast says. The summit itself? A bit anticlimactic to be honest, nothing like the dramatic viewpoints you'd get from Ben Vorlich or Ben Vane nearby, but the Loch views properly justify the climb.

If you're based at Beinglas Campsite - which is handy and decent value - this makes a solid afternoon proposition. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might struggle with the gradient. Solo walkers and serious hillbaggers will tackle it as part of a longer Arrochar circuit, which is where it shines.

Free to walk, no permits needed. Start early though - parking near Arrochar fills up fast on weekends, and the weather can turn quickly in this part of Stirling. Not a must-do, but if you're already exploring the southern Highlands, it's a decent way to spend a day.
