Meall Clachach

The walk up Meall Clachach isn't going to leave you breathless with awe, but on a clear day from Callander it's a proper straightforward climb that rewards you with views across the Stirling lowlands. The peak sits roughly 2,300 feet up, which means it's genuinely accessible without needing scrambling experience or alpine fitness - more bracing Scottish hill walk than serious mountaineering.

You get the sense you're on the edge of something bigger here. To the north the Highland boundary shifts, and from the summit you can pick out Ben Ledi and the Trossachs if the weather plays ball. On grey days it's less compelling, honestly. Allow two to three hours return if you're starting from Callander town. The path itself is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though proper boots matter more than they might look.

For families with older kids this works well as a half-day outing - long enough to feel like an achievement without eating up your entire holiday. Keen walkers doing circuits through the Trossachs region will find it a logical add-on rather than a destination in itself. If you're basing yourself at Keltie Bridge Caravan Park or Callander Woods Holiday Park, both within five miles, it's the sort of thing you do on a decent morning and knock off before lunch.

Skip it if you're after dramatic mountain scenery or dramatic weather drama. Head straight for Ben Ledi instead. But if you want a gentle hill with honest views and don't mind Scottish midges if the season's wrong, Meall Clachach sits exactly where it should.
