Meall Buidhe

Getting to the top of Meall Buidhe isn't about ticking off a Munro - it's about the walk itself, which matters far more than the summit. The mountain sits near Crianlarich in the southern Highlands, and it's the kind of peak that rewards decent legs and a willingness to push uphill for a couple of hours.

You're looking at a fairly straightforward climb once you find the parking, mostly on good paths with bracken and heather either side. The weather will make or break your day here - come in drizzle and you'll see nothing but cloud; catch it on a clear afternoon and the views south towards the Forth Valley open up properly. That's when you realise why locals bother with it.

It's perfect for experienced walkers wanting something achievable without committing to a full day in the hills. You won't find much technical climbing - it's grunt and graft, really. Families with older kids might manage it, though younger ones could find the slog dull. Expect around three to four hours return, depending on fitness.

If you're staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park nearby, it's an obvious choice for a morning or afternoon mission. Worth doing. Not worth planning your entire trip around, but if you're in the area and the weather's cooperating, there's no reason to miss it. Just don't expect the drama of higher peaks - this is honest, unglamorous hill walking at its best.
