Meakley Wood

Walk into Meakley Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper Essex woodland - the kind of place that feels a world away from the A1124 that runs nearby. It's a small forest, nothing vast, but the canopy is dense enough that you'll forget Halstead exists just a couple of miles south. Paths wind through beech and oak, muddy in winter, pleasant underfoot most other times. You won't find visitor facilities or marked trails here, so come prepared with decent shoes and a sense of direction.

This is walkers' territory, particularly those after a quick woodland circuit rather than an epic hike. Families with younger kids might manage an hour around the perimeter before energy flags, though there's not much to hold their attention beyond trees and the occasional bird. If you're history-minded, the wood itself won't deliver - it's just woodland - but it sits in an area loaded with Essex heritage, so it makes a natural break between other attractions.

During a holiday at Gosfield Lake Resort or Hill Farm campsite - both within a few miles - Meakley Wood works as a morning walk to clear your head. It's free, requires no booking, and takes as long as you want it to. Spring's probably best, when things start growing, though autumn has its mood. Don't expect adventure or challenge. Do expect quiet, genuine woodland and a proper stretch of the legs.
