Meadow Pool

There's a proper sense of escape about Meadow Pool, tucked away near Leicester without feeling like you've driven to the end of the earth. It's a genuine lake rather than a glorified pond, which counts for something in the Midlands where water features are thin on the ground.

The walking is straightforward - you'll find paths around the perimeter that take anything from half an hour to a couple of hours depending on how leisurely you're being. The water draws birdwatchers like a magnet, and if you're into that sort of thing, you'll spot cormorants, geese, and if you're lucky, kingfishers. The banks are accessible enough for families with younger kids, though there's nothing in the way of facilities, so come prepared.

It works brilliantly as a half-day activity sandwiched between other stuff. If you're staying at Reas Glamping Retreat at Zillahs Spinney - about six miles away - Meadow Pool makes an easy morning outing before you head back for lunch. The site's got that proper Midlands appeal: wild enough to feel like you've got away from it all, but close enough to Leicester that you're not completely cut off.

Timing-wise, go early if you can, especially on weekends. The light's better for photography anyway, and you'll avoid the family groups who pile in after school. Spring and autumn are particularly good - summer can get a bit muddy in places, and winter's fine if you don't mind squelching about.
