McKenna Gallery

The McKenna Gallery sits in Omagh, a proper cultural pocket in what's otherwise hill-walking country. It's a contemporary art space that punches above its weight - the sort of place you'd walk past thinking it's nothing special, then spend a solid hour inside wondering why it isn't packed with people from Belfast.

The gallery rotates its exhibitions, so what you'll see depends on timing. I found myself looking at work from Irish and international artists, displayed across clean white walls with decent natural light. It's intimate rather than sprawling - you won't need half a day here, but if you're into current visual art, it's worth a proper look.

Small towns in Fermanagh and Omagh don't have loads of indoor attractions, which means this fills a useful gap if the weather turns grim. It's also the sort of place families with teenagers who care about art will actually enjoy, rather than something adults drag kids to on principle.

Locally, it works well alongside the hiking at Gortin Glen, just five miles away - do the glamping there, spend a morning or afternoon walking the forest trails, then duck into town for the gallery when feet are sore. The free admission (or modest entry fee - honestly, I should've checked the board on my way out) makes it low-risk.

Nearly always quiet, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on your mood. I found it refreshing.
