It's a stone column topped with a weathered cross - the kind of thing you might walk past without looking twice, until you realise you're standing in front of one of England's few surviving examples of these communal gathering points.

What you're looking at is basically a relic of May Day celebrations that went back centuries. Locals would gather here to dance, feast, and generally cause mayhem come spring. The Penrith version has survived centuries of Puritan disapproval and general neglect, which is rather impressive for a thing that looks like a fairly ordinary stone marker.

Historically minded types will get the most from this - it's the sort of thing that makes sense once you understand what it represents, but won't hold anyone's attention for long. You're not looking at a massive structure or dramatic ruins. Maybe five minutes if you read up on it first, ten if the mood takes you.

It's free and accessible whenever you fancy a wander into town. From Howdy Glamping or Crossfells Campsite, both just over four miles away, you could easily combine a visit with proper exploring of Penrith's Georgian high street and the ruins of Penrith Castle. The May Pole itself works best as a brief historical footnote to a larger town visit rather than a destination in its own right.
