Mary’s Cherry Tree

There's an old wild cherry tree near Cupar that's become something of a local pilgrimage point, and honestly, it's one of those things you either make a detour for or skip depending on your mood. Mary's Cherry Tree sits within a small nature reserve that's quietly lovely in spring when the blossom's out, though in truth, the tree itself is gnarled and modest rather than showy. What you're really paying for is the walk around it - proper woodland trails through Fife countryside, decent birdsong if you time it right, and views that open up every now and then across the farmland towards the Fife plain. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning. History buffs might appreciate the local connections, though the signage could be better. For families with young legs, the walks are manageable rather than strenuous - perhaps thirty minutes to an hour depending on which loop you fancy. The best time is late April into May when everything's greening up and the tree's in flower. If you're staying at Snugs at Logie Farm nearby - and it's a cracking spot for a rural break - this makes an easy morning outing before lunch. Admission appears to be free, which is just as well given there are no facilities to speak of. Don't expect facilities or a visitor centre. It's deliberately low-key, which is either its charm or its limitation. A nice addition to a Fife park holiday rather than a reason to make one.
