Marwell wildlife park

Marwell sits just outside Winchester and is genuinely one of those places that works better than you'd expect. It's a proper zoo-meets-safari park hybrid where you can wander around at your own pace looking at everything from giraffes to red pandas without feeling herded along a fixed route.

The layout is spread across enough ground that it doesn't feel cramped, even when it's busy. You'll spend a good three to four hours here if you're thorough - longer if you've got kids who want to linger at the enclosures and watch the feeding times. The big cats are predictably excellent. The primate section is where things get genuinely interesting though; watching the social dynamics actually makes you think about animal behaviour rather than just ticking off species.

It's worth checking ahead for keeper talks and feeding sessions - these elevate it from a casual wander to something with real educational weight. Parents with younger children will find plenty to keep them engaged; older kids and adults who care about conservation won't feel like they're slumming it either.

Beechen Glamping is close by if you're doing a longer Hampshire trip, which makes pairing Marwell with a few days in the area quite workable. You could easily tie it in with Winchester's cathedral and market town buzz. The park itself can get touristy during school holidays, so going midweek or out of peak season genuinely improves the experience. Admission isn't cheap, but if you're into animals at all, it justifies the cost.
