Martyr's Memorial

The memorial sits on a windswept hillside just outside Newton Stewart, marking where two Covenanters were executed in 1685. You get proper views across Dumfries & Galloway from up here, the kind that make the climb worthwhile even if you're not particularly fussed about the historical significance.

But it works well as a stopping point if you're exploring the area on foot - there are decent walking routes threading through the hills nearby. Free to visit, obviously. The weather matters more than most attractions - come on a clear day and it's genuinely pleasant; come in Scottish drizzle and you'll be wondering why you bothered. If you're based at Drumroamin Farm just down the road, it's worth fitting in as a quick leg-stretch rather than a main event.
