Martnaham Castle

The ruins sit quietly on a rise just outside Maybole, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. Martnaham Castle is what remains of a 15th-century stronghold - mostly foundations and broken walls now, but enough to get a sense of what stood here centuries ago. You're looking at the bones of a tower house, the kind of fortified residence that dotted the Scottish Lowlands when families needed to defend themselves properly.

It's genuinely free to visit, no gates, no fees. Just turn up and have a poke around. The site itself is small - you won't spend more than 20 minutes properly exploring it, maybe 10 if you're just after a quick look. The real appeal is archaeological rather than dramatic; if you're the sort who enjoys reading old stones and imagining what life was like, you'll get something from it. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already interested in castles and history.

Worth combining with other bits in the area. Haven Craig Tara Holiday Park sits 5.8 miles away and makes a decent base for exploring South Ayrshire. Maybole itself has more obvious attractions if you need a fallback plan. The castle works best as part of a broader wander around the region rather than a destination on its own. On a decent day it's pleasant enough - open to the elements but that's part of the charm when you're looking at something this old.
