Marston Bigot Park

The reserve sits quietly on the edge of Warminster, a proper slice of Wiltshire countryside that doesn't shout about itself. You're walking through mixed woodland and open grassland here - the sort of place where you actually see things if you keep still for five minutes. Skylarks in summer, winter thrushes, the usual suspects. There's a network of paths that let you potter about for anything from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how serious you are about it.

It's ideal for anyone who wants a gentle walk without the tourist crowds. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not a destination you'd drive an hour for on its own. That said, if you're camping at Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club just 2.8 miles away, or staying at one of the Longleat holiday parks nearby, it's an excellent way to stretch your legs without leaving the area. The Treehouses are even closer at 4.8 miles - perfect if you want to break up a park-based holiday with some actual nature.

Go early morning if you can. The light's better and you'll have the paths to yourself. The grassland can get boggy after heavy rain, so check conditions beforehand if you've got kids in tow. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and pack properly. It's the sort of walk you do because you want to be outside, not because there's a visitor centre or a tea shop waiting.
