Marlpit Hill

The walk up Marlpit Hill from Edenbridge takes you through proper Kent countryside - rolling fields, hedgerows, the lot. It's not a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. You get a decent vantage over the Weald without the scramble you'd need elsewhere, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the effort worthwhile.

Allow a couple of hours for a round trip if you're starting from town, though fit walkers will do it faster. The gradient's steady rather than steep, so families with older kids handle it fine. Younger ones might find the final stretch a bit of a slog, if only because there's nothing dramatic waiting at the top - no dramatic viewpoint platform, no café, no facilities. Just you, the sky, and a proper sense of having earned a quiet moment.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer walking day around Edenbridge, and if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Luna Domes or Long Acres are both within striking distance - it's an easy morning excursion before heading back for lunch. Free to access, obviously. Conditions underfoot can get muddy after rain, so proper boots matter. Spring and early summer are best, when the fields around you are actually worth looking at. Winter's fine too if you don't mind the grey, but there's less reason to linger.
