Marlow Lock

The Thames locks are proper workings - not museum pieces - and Marlow Lock is one of the better ones to watch from the towpath. You'll see the gates open and close, boats rising and falling with the water, and if you time it right, the whole mechanical ballet plays out while you lean against the railings with a coffee.

It's free to stand and watch, takes about twenty minutes if you catch a boat going through, longer if you want to sit on the bench and observe the pattern of the place. The lock keeper's cottage sits right there, and there's a real sense of the Thames as a working river rather than just a pretty backdrop. The weir runs alongside it - genuinely impressive when the water's high.

Walkers get the most from this. It's a natural stop on the towpath between Marlow town itself and Hurley, part of a proper day's riverside walk rather than a standalone destination. Families with young kids will manage thirty minutes of interest before wanting to move on, though anyone obsessed with boats or water will happily camp here longer.

If you're camping at Hurleyford Farm or Hurley Riverside Park, this is a two-minute detour on your morning walk rather than a special trip. Spring and summer weekends bring the most boat traffic - it's quieter and slightly more meditative midweek. The towpath is accessible year-round, though winter can get muddy. Worth the walk from Marlow town, but don't expect it to occupy a full afternoon unless you're genuinely fascinated by how locks work.
