Markby Priory

Stone fragments scattered across a muddy field - that's what remains of this 12th-century Augustinian priory, once home to a community of canons regular. The ruins sit quietly in farmland between Markby village and the Lincolnshire coast, with just enough masonry poking through the grass to hint at the substantial religious house that stood here for nearly 400 years.

History buffs will appreciate the solitude and the chance to piece together the priory's layout from the low walls and foundation stones. There's precious little signage, so you'll need to bring your imagination and perhaps do a bit of homework beforehand. The site feels genuinely forgotten, which adds to its appeal if you're after an authentic medieval atmosphere without the crowds.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much standing architecture to impress the kids, and it's essentially a very old ruin in a field. Serious walkers and those interested in monastic history will get more from a visit.

The priory makes for a decent diversion if you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Mablethorpe - Sutton-on-Sea campsite is just two miles away, and several others cluster around the coast. It's the sort of place that takes twenty minutes to explore properly, perfect for breaking up a day at the seaside. Just check it's accessible before making the trip, as opening arrangements aren't always clear for these lesser-known English Heritage properties.
