Marine Gardens

The seafront at Larne has a proper gem tucked away in Marine Gardens. It's a coastal nature reserve that catches you off guard if you're just passing through - proper stretch of shoreline with rocky outcrops, shingle beach, and enough interesting stuff to keep you occupied for a good hour or so.

You're looking at a mix of habitats here. The rocks pool at low tide, so if you've got kids keen on spotting crabs and anemones, time your visit around the tides. The vegetation changes as you move inland from the salt spray zone, which sounds dull on paper but genuinely shifts what you see. Birdwatchers get proper excited about this place in spring and autumn - waders and seabirds come through regularly.

The real draw is how close it sits to Larne town without feeling manic. It's free to wander, no fees, no gates. You can spend as long as you like poking about. Wear sensible shoes though - those rocks are slippery when wet, and the Northern Irish weather won't ask permission before turning damp.

If you're based at Down to Earth Wild Camping just down the road, this makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not dramatic clifftop stuff - no Instagram-moment golden hour scenery - but it's genuine coastal nature, the kind of place where you actually notice what's happening in a rockpool rather than just walking past it. Worth the detour if you're in Mid and East Antrim already.
