Mare & Foal

A sculpture by Henry Moore sits in the Sussex countryside just outside Horsham, and it's the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk. Mare & Foal is two bronze figures - a mother horse and her foal - caught in a moment that feels both monumental and intimate. You won't need hours here, but you'll want to circle it a few times, taking in how the light catches the metal differently from each angle.

The gallery itself is a quiet affair, nothing pretentious. The real draw is stepping outside and finding yourself alone with these forms in the landscape. It works best if you're already exploring the area or based at one of the nearby camps - Raylands Country Park or Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are both within easy driving distance. Pair it with a walk around Horsham or a visit to another sculpture park in the region.

Kids might find it underwhelming if you oversell it as entertainment, but if they've got a genuine interest in art or animals, the scale of the bronze pieces tends to impress. Bring a camera. The piece photographs well in different seasons, especially when frost catches the metal or storm light rolls across.

Best visited on a quieter weekday if you can manage it. Allow 20 minutes unless you're genuinely transfixed - and some visitors are. Worth a detour if you're camping nearby, but don't base your whole trip around it.
