Manorbier Castle

The castle sits right above the beach at Manorbier, which immediately sets it apart from the usual clifftop fortifications you'll find along this coast. It's a proper Norman stronghold - all defensive walls and towers - built in the 12th century and somehow still standing despite centuries of Welsh weather and English bombardment. You can walk around the ruins, poke into the keep, and actually feel the weight of the place rather than just gawping at it from a visitor centre.

Historically minded types will have a field day here. The castle was home to Gerald of Wales, who wrote some of the earliest descriptions of medieval Wales, so there's proper literary pedigree attached to the stones. Kids can manage the walk around the walls and enjoy the drama of the setting - that beach access is genuine, not a tourist board exaggeration. Families staying at Beavers Retreat Glamping or Becks Bay Camping just down the road won't need more than an hour or so here, though the combination of castle exploring and beach time makes for a solid afternoon.

Tenby is only a few miles west, so this works well as a quieter alternative to the busier seaside town. The castle doesn't demand the full half-day commitment some attractions need - it's more of a worthwhile detour if you're already in Pembrokeshire. Come when the tide's out if possible, just to see the full drama of the setting. The approach down to the castle from the car park is a bit steep for what it is, but nothing that'll cause real problems.
