Malvern Hills National Landscape

The Malvern Hills rise up suddenly from the Worcestershire plain like a proper spine running north to south, and once you're up there, the views across three counties feel genuinely worth the climb. This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops - it's a working landscape of heather, grassland, and ancient ridgeway that locals have walked for centuries.

You've got options depending on what you're after. Serious walkers tackle the full Malvern Ridge walk, a demanding nine-mile stretch with real elevation changes. Families with younger legs do better on the shorter trails around West Malvern or sticking to the lower flanks near the town itself. On a clear day, you can see the Cotswolds and the Black Mountains from the higher points. On a hazy day - and there are plenty - you'll still get a good sense of why the Victorians came here for the air.

It's free to access and you can turn up anytime. Allow anywhere from 90 minutes for a gentle loop to a full day if you're doing the ridge properly. Spring and early autumn are best - the summer crowds can be thicker than expected, and winter brings proper mud.

Several caravan parks sit within a few miles: Malvern Hills Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is closest at 2.5 miles, with Blackmore and Oakmere Parks also nearby. Base yourself in town or at one of these parks and you've got excellent walking territory straight from your door. Not a destination by itself, but absolutely essential if you're staying in the area.
