Malvern Commons

The Malvern Commons sprawl across the hills west of Worcester like something that's been left to its own devices for centuries - because it has. You're walking through genuine common land here, the sort of place where locals have had grazing rights since medieval times, and it shows. The heathland and grassland shift with the seasons; spring brings a quiet carpet of growth, autumn turns everything golden, and winter strips it back to something almost stark.

It's proper walker's territory. The hills roll without being punishing, and on a clear day the views across Herefordshire are genuinely good - though I'll be honest, the Malverns themselves are hardly dramatic compared to what you get further west. What makes it work is the sense of space and the fact that you can genuinely get away from people. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the commons support all sorts that you won't find in manicured parks.

Families with older kids will do well here - little ones might find it a bit samey after an hour or so. The ground can be boggy in winter, so check conditions before dragging the pushchair out. Admission's free and there's no set visiting hours; it's common land, so you just turn up.

Stay at The Turbles or Swallowfields Retreat nearby, both within Worcester's orbit, and the commons become a proper morning walk rather than a special trip. It works best as part of a wider Worcestershire itinerary rather than a destination in itself.
