The ruins of a Roman villa aren't what most people expect when they pull up near St. Neots. But that's precisely what makes Maltmans Villa worth a stop if you're camping nearby.

What you're looking at are the remains of a substantial villa occupied from around the 1st century AD through to the 4th. The layout is readable enough if you spend ten minutes with it - you can pick out room divisions, the hypocaust heating system, fragments of mosaic. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of patience and imagination. Bring a guidebook or download some information beforehand; there's nothing on site to explain what you're seeing.

Historically minded adults will find it absorbing. Kids? Less so, unless they're already engaged by Roman life. You're really here for the walk and the context rather than a dramatic experience. Allow thirty minutes at most, and time it for a clear day when the light helps you see the ground plan properly.

It makes sense as a morning detour if you're based at St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site - practically on the doorstep - or as a rainy-day alternative to the bigger attractions. Cambridgeshire Lakes is far enough away that you'd bundle it with a wider tour of the area. The site itself is free and accessible, though you'll want sturdy shoes and recent rain will make it muddy.
