Malt Cross

The Malt Cross in Nottingham is a proper Victorian gin palace that's somehow survived into the 21st century with most of its original character intact. Built in 1855, it's one of those places where you can actually feel the weight of history - ornate tilework, etched mirrors, and a long mahogany bar that's seen a century and a half of conversations. It's still a working pub, which is the best thing about it. You're not paying entry fees or dealing with roped-off velvet; you're just ordering a pint and soaking up the atmosphere like locals have done for generations.

The interior is genuinely striking if you're into Victorian design and industrial heritage. The tiling alone is worth a proper look - geometric patterns and rich colours that most modern pubs wouldn't dare attempt. Don't expect a museum experience though. This is a living, breathing boozer first, tourist attraction second.

It works brilliantly as a stop-off if you're staying at any of the caravan parks within a couple of miles - Holme Pierrepont or the Caravan Park are practically on your doorstep. Couple of hours maximum, unless you settle in for a drink and end up chatting to someone about Nottingham's industrial past. History types will get more from it than families with young kids, and solo travellers often find the bar staff chatty. The location in central Nottingham means it slots easily into a broader day out exploring the city's Georgian terraces and medieval lanes.
