Major's Leap

The drop here is genuinely steep - the sort of cliff that makes you take a step back and reconsider your footing. Major's Leap sits just outside Shrewsbury, a sandstone escarpment that local legend claims took its name from a cavalier officer who allegedly jumped his horse over the edge to escape Roundhead forces during the English Civil War. Whether that's true or just good storytelling, the viewpoint itself is the real draw.

It's a short, easy walk to reach, and the view across the Shropshire landscape is proper worth the trip. On a clear day you can see for miles - rolling fields, distant hills, the whole county spread out below you. There's something about standing at a high point and being able to map out the terrain that feels satisfying, especially if you're planning to explore further into the area.

Family groups will manage this fine - kids either love the slight thrill of the height or they won't, but either way you're not committing hours here. Twenty minutes to half an hour, tops. Walkers heading between Shrewsbury and the surrounding countryside often work it into a longer loop. The admission is free and there's no formal opening hours, though you'll want daylight and decent weather to make the most of it.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Lower Hill is closest at just 1.4 miles - this makes an easy morning outing before exploring the market town proper. It's the sort of thing that takes minimal planning but genuinely rewards the effort.
