The forest stretches quiet and serious around Carlisle, one of those Cumbrian woodlands that doesn't announce itself but rewards those who actually bother to walk into it. Major Wood offers proper walking territory without the crowds you'd find at some of the Lake District honey pots. The paths meander through mixed woodland - oak, birch, conifer - and it's the kind of place where you might genuinely lose an hour without realising how far you've gone.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a tick-box stroll; you need comfortable boots and a decent map. Families with young kids could manage the easier routes, but the whole forest won't hold their attention for more than a couple of hours. The real draw is solitude and a genuine bit of forest immersion without having to drive hours into the mountains.

Access appears to be free, which is refreshing. Most visits run between two and three hours depending on the route you take. Spring and autumn are cracking times - the ground's not waterlogged like winter, and you'll actually see the woodland structure rather than being buried in summer greenery.

If you're based at Low Moor Head Caravan Park just six miles away, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon out. It complements a broader Carlisle area holiday nicely - close enough for a half-day trip without requiring serious planning. Not dramatic, not Instagram-famous, but solidly worthwhile if you actually enjoy walking through a wood.
