Main Rig

The walk up Main Rig takes you through proper moorland terrain just outside Dumfries, and the views back towards the town and surrounding hills reward the effort. It's not a massive peak - nothing like the Cairngorms - but that's rather the point. You can be up and back down in a couple of hours without needing crampons or a rescue team on standby.

The ascent is straightforward enough, though the ground gets boggy in places, so proper boots aren't optional. On a clear day the panorama across the Lowlands is genuinely worth the walk. When it's cloudy, mind you, you're mostly just trudging through mist, so pick your weather carefully.

This works brilliantly for families who want a hill walk without committing to a full day's expedition, or for walkers based at Burnside of Ae Glamping nearby - it's an easy morning outing to stretch the legs. History types won't find much up here, but landscape photographers will have a decent time, particularly if you catch the light right across the moorland.

There's no visitor infrastructure, so bring water and maybe a snack. The moorland can be bleak in winter, genuinely atmospheric in spring and autumn. It sits well with a broader Dumfries & Galloway walking break - plenty of better-known peaks within an hour's drive if you want more ambitious stuff.
