Cocklet Hill

The walk up Cocklet Hill rewards you with proper views across Dumfries and Galloway's rolling landscape. It's a modest peak - nothing that requires scrambling or serious kit - but the vantage point makes it worth the leg work from Dumfries itself.

You get south-facing slopes and moorland scrub on the approach, the kind of terrain that feels properly rural without being remote. The summit itself is nothing fancy - a bump with a decent radius of sight - but on a clear day you can trace the contours of the whole region stretching away. The walk takes a couple of hours there and back at an easy pace, so it suits families with older kids and anyone wanting an afternoon ramble without the drive to somewhere more dramatic.

The real value is the accessibility. Dumfries is close enough for a start-of-day venture before you settle into a park routine. Burnside of Ae Glamping sits just under two miles away, which is handy - you could knock this out before or after setting up. If you're based at The Outdoor Hotel or Red Squirrel Campsite further out, it's still an easy reach for an evening walk when you've had enough of the camper.

Go in autumn when the light sits lower and the moorland grasses catch the sun properly. Summer can be thick with midges if the wind drops. There's no visitor infrastructure - bring water, wear decent boots - but that's rather the point.
