Maiden Castle

You're looking at one of Scotland's finest Iron Age hill forts, perched on a ridge outside Kinross with views that stretch across Perthshire proper. The earthworks are substantial - concentric ramparts rise dramatically from the surrounding farmland, and walking the perimeter takes a good hour if you're not rushing. There's precious little interpretation on site, which means you either come armed with a guidebook or you just enjoy the raw archaeology and the landscape itself.

It's genuinely impressive for history types and anyone who gets a kick from understanding how ancient people chose their ground. The defensive position is obvious the moment you're up there. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming though - there are no ruins to clamber through, just grass and ditches and a decent walk. Walkers will get far more from it.

Free to access and open year-round, which is typical for Scottish archaeological sites. Allow ninety minutes if you're doing it properly. Late spring through early autumn beats winter, when the wind can be fierce and mud lingers. The site sits well within reach of Kinross, making it an easy morning outing if you're based at Wild Goose Glamping nearby. Pair it with a proper walk in the surrounding hills rather than treating it as a standalone destination - that's when it clicks into place.
