Maiden Bower (Motte and Bailey)

The earthworks rise from the North Yorkshire landscape like something from a child's storybook - two concentric mounds with a ditch running between them, all grass-covered and quietly impressive. This is Maiden Bower, a proper motte and bailey castle that dates back to Norman times, though whether it ever saw serious action is lost to history. What you're looking at is the defensive structure itself: a raised mound (the motte) where a wooden keep would have stood, surrounded by a larger fortified enclosure (the bailey). It's the sort of place archaeologists get excited about but most visitors overlook entirely.

You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards here - it's just the earthwork itself, open to the elements and completely free. The walk around the perimeter takes twenty minutes or so, and the views across the Vale of York toward Thirsk are worth the effort alone. History buffs will find the strategic positioning genuinely interesting, though casual visitors might struggle to imagine what stood here 900 years ago without a bit of pre-visit research.

It's ideal if you're staying at Woodland Lakes Lodges or The Hideaway at Baxby Manor and fancy a short walk with some Anglo-Norman credentials attached. Go in dry weather - after rain these banks get slippery. The site works best as part of a broader North Yorkshire archaeology circuit rather than a destination in itself, but if you're already in the area, it rewards a detour.
