Mahamarine

The aquarium sits just outside Sawbridgeworth, east of the town proper. Mahamarine is a modest operation - don't expect the scale of places like Sea Life - but it's the sort of spot that works well if you're based at The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake or Toad Abode nearby and the weather turns wet.

Inside, tanks hold freshwater and tropical fish, with enough variety to keep children engaged for an hour or so. The setup is straightforward rather than flashy. You'll see cichlids, tetras, and the usual tropical fare that young kids find genuinely interesting - particularly anything with teeth or unexpected colours. Adults touring through alone might find it a touch thin on content, though fish-keeping enthusiasts could appreciate the aquaculture side of things.

It's free or very cheap to enter, which is the saving grace. Allow roughly forty minutes to an hour, longer if your children are the type to press their faces against every tank. Go mid-week if possible to avoid school groups clogging the walkways.

As part of a caravan week in the area, it serves a purpose - a quiet rainy-day activity that breaks up the routine without being a major expedition. The Wild Retreat is barely half a mile away, making it an easy push if you've got restless kids. Toad Abode over at Fyfield is marginally further but still very doable. It's not worth planning a trip around, but it slots into a broader East Anglia itinerary sensibly enough.
