Magpie Mine

The old lead workings at Magpie Mine near Bakewell are a proper window into Derbyshire's industrial past. What you're looking at is a Victorian-era mine shaft complex, complete with engine houses and processing ruins scattered across moorland. The landscape tells the story of 19th-century mining operations - you can still make out the brick structures, collapsed buildings, and the distinctive mine bell pit craters pocking the ground around you.

It's the kind of place that genuinely rewards a slow walk. Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from it, though anyone with an interest in industrial heritage will find themselves drawn back repeatedly. The ruins aren't polished or heavily interpreted - they're raw, which makes them more evocative than many better-funded heritage sites. Allow a couple of hours if you're properly exploring the site and the surrounding moorland.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared for open country. Bakewell sits just a couple of miles away, making this an excellent half-day excursion from any of the nearby campsites - Lathkill Wild Campsite is barely a mile and a half off. The mine fits well into a broader Peak District walking holiday; it's not a standalone destination, but rather a compelling addition to your exploration of the area's industrial heritage.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though the site itself demands respect - it's genuinely hazardous in places. Wear proper boots and don't venture into any structures.
