Magherafelt Baptist Church

The Baptist Church on the main drag in Magherafelt is a proper brick Victorian job - the sort of building you'd walk past a hundred times without really noticing, then one day you actually look up and realise it's got real character. It's not one of those tourist-trap ecclesiastical sites with gift shops and guided tours. This is an active congregation space, so you'll want to time your visit around services or ring ahead to arrange a look round.

What you're really getting here is a snapshot of 19th-century nonconformist architecture - solid, unpretentious, nothing ostentatious. The interior's got the bones of something properly built: decent timber work, good proportions, the sort of space that feels right when you're actually standing in it. It appeals most to church historians and anyone interested in how ordinary communities invested in their own buildings back when that meant something.

Magherafelt itself is a working market town in County Antrim, not a place built for tourism, which is partly why it's worth the detour. If you're based out at Sett on The Lough - a smashing family caravan park just up the road - the church makes for a twenty-minute meander into town. Pair it with a proper look around Antrim town itself, which has castles and lakeside walks nearby.

Don't expect an hour here. Twenty minutes maximum, and only if Victorian church architecture genuinely gets you going. But it's the sort of place that rewards actually knowing something about it beforehand.
