Maer Pool

The water here is proper still, almost glassy on a calm morning. Maer Pool sits just outside Stafford and is one of those places that sneaks up on you - not dramatic, not particularly famous, but genuinely pleasant for an hour or two. It's a working water body, so you won't find theme park crowds or screaming kids. Instead there's fishing, walking around the perimeter, and the kind of quiet that feels earned rather than pretentious.

For walkers it's decent. The paths are manageable, nothing too demanding, and you get a decent circuit if you fancy stretching your legs. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the pool attracts waterfowl and it's the sort of place where you might actually spot something interesting without needing to trek miles. Families with younger children will manage fine as long as they're not expecting thrills. The water's the draw here, not facilities.

Timing-wise, go early if you can. Morning light hits the water nicely and you'll avoid whatever midday crowds do show up. No idea about admission costs as information's sparse, but places like this are usually free or next to nothing. It pairs well with a base at Fledgling Farm just down the road - that campsite's highly rated and gives you a proper spot for exploring the area without being stuck in Stafford town centre. Come here for a peaceful walk and a bit of nature watching, not for excitement.
