Maen Esgob

Climbing up through bracken and rough moorland, you'll find yourself questioning whether the 1,785-foot summit is worth the effort. But when you reach Maen Esgob's rocky top, the views across the Conwy Valley make every upward step worthwhile.

This isn't a peak for casual walkers - the route demands proper boots and a decent level of fitness. The final scramble over loose rock can be tricky in wet conditions, though the sense of achievement when you reach the triangulation point is properly rewarding. From the top, Conwy Castle looks like a toy fortress below, while Snowdonia's higher peaks stretch out in all directions.

Families with younger children might struggle with the terrain, but teenagers who fancy themselves as mountaineers will love the challenge. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from Conwy, including time to catch your breath and take photos at the summit.

The peak works well as a morning adventure if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Lyons Pendyffryn Hall or Craiglwyd Hall. Start early to avoid the heat and crowds, then spend the afternoon recovering by the coast or exploring Conwy's medieval streets. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on seemingly clear days.
