Machrie Moor Stone Circle 1

You'll need proper boots and a sense of adventure for this one. Machrie Moor sits on the Isle of Arran, a windswept stretch of moorland where six Bronze Age stone circles stand in various states of repair - some still tall and commanding, others reduced to low stumps jutting from the heather. The largest circle measures about 85 feet across, and walking among these ancient stones feels genuinely isolated, which is half the appeal.

It's free to access and takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to walk the full circuit, though you can spend longer if you're the contemplative type. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards - it's just you, the stones, and a lot of wind. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your patience for ambiguity. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after 20 minutes, but serious walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get proper value here.

The landscape itself is the real draw. You're standing where people were 3,500 years ago, surrounded by moorland that hasn't fundamentally changed. On a clear day, the views toward the Firth of Clyde are excellent. Wet weather, which is frequent, turns the walk into a slog.

If you're staying at Kings Caves Glamping just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short trip. Pair it with a walk around Arran's coastal paths or the Brodick Castle grounds for a proper day out. Go early in the day if you want any chance of decent light and relative solitude.
