MacGregor Monument

The MacGregor Monument sits on a hillside above Callander, a modest stone tower dedicated to the memory of Rob Roy MacGregor - the outlaw who became a legend. Kids will manage the walk fine, though younger ones might need a hand on steeper bits. You won't spend hours here, but it's the sort of place that rewards a detour if you're already in the area.

Free to visit, as far as anyone can tell. Bring decent shoes - the path can be muddy even days after rain. Go mid-week if you value quiet. The monument itself won't win beauty contests, but standing there looking out over that landscape, you understand why the MacGregors fought so hard for this country.
