Lytham Jetty

The Victorian pier at Lytham hasn't changed much since Victorian times, and that's rather the point. It's a proper jetty in the old-fashioned sense - timber decking stretching out into the Irish Sea with nothing fancy about it, which is exactly why locals and visitors keep coming back.

You get a 150-metre stroll along the water's edge, decent views across the bay toward Blackpool and the Lancashire coast beyond. On clear days you can make out the Pennines inland. The jetty itself is functional rather than spectacular - no arcades, no shops, no theatre at the end like the pleasure piers down south. Just the sea, the structure, and enough room to lean against the rail and watch the light change across the water.

Walkers and photographers seem to get the most from it. The promenade area around Lytham is excellent for longer coastal rambles, and the jetty makes a natural turning point. It's also genuinely free, takes about twenty minutes if you're not stopping, though most people do linger a bit. Windy days can be bracing - you're fully exposed out there.

If you're staying at Mowbreck Park, just five miles inland near Preston, this makes an easy half-hour drive for a bit of sea air. It's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning visit rather than a summer Saturday afternoon. Not Instagram-famous, which means you'll actually have space to breathe.
