Lynn Falls - Waterfall

The walk down to Lynn Falls is steep enough to make your calves complain, but the payoff is a proper waterfall thundering into a dark pool surrounded by woodland. It's not a long trek from Ayrshire, and the whole thing takes maybe an hour if you're not rushing. The falls themselves aren't massive - we're talking Scottish Lowlands, not Swiss Alps - but the setting is lovely. The water crashes over moss-covered rocks and there's a real sense of discovery when you reach the base, especially on a grey day when the mist hangs around the trees.

Walkers will appreciate it. Families with kids who can handle a muddy path and some scrambling will find it worthwhile. Anyone after a quick stroll in flip-flops should probably stay put. The pool is deep enough to be tempting on a hot day, though the water's cold enough to take your breath away.

You won't need to pay for it - it's a waterfall, not a theme park. Allow a good couple of hours if you're taking photos or just hanging about. The woodland is thick enough that it stays green even in drier spells, so summer visits work fine, though spring when the water's high from snowmelt is probably the most impressive.
