Lyngford Park

The wetlands around Lyngford Park stretch out flat and endless, the kind of landscape that stops you dead. It's a proper nature reserve on the Somerset Levels, just outside Taunton, and the appeal lies entirely in what flies past your binoculars rather than what you see from the car park.

This is birdwatcher territory, full stop. Winter brings waders and wildfowl in serious numbers - redshank, snipe, lapwing. Spring gets hectic with nesting activity if you know where to look. The whole thing feels delightfully unglamorous compared to more famous reserves. You won't find visitor centres or marked trails with interpretive boards. What you get is space, water, and the sort of quiet that lets you actually hear what's happening.

Walking paths exist but they're not well signposted, and depending on the season the ground can be boggy enough to justify proper boots. Realistically, allow two hours if you're genuinely interested in wildlife. Half an hour if you've just wandered over from Cornish Farm Touring Park or Ashe Farm Caravan and Camping Site and want a stretch of the legs.

It's free, which helps. The nearest facilities are in Taunton itself - you'll want to sort out binoculars and a bird guide before you arrive. This won't entertain children restless for activities, but for anyone serious about spotting migrants or just wanting to stand in silence on the Levels, it's absolutely worth the trip.
