About Lyn yr Oerfel
Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place you visit as part of a bigger Snowdonia circuit rather than a standalone trip, and the journey matters more than the destination. The water reflects whatever light breaks through the clouds, which can range from brilliant silver to moody gunmetal. On a clear day - rare enough up here - the views back towards Blaenau Ffestiniog and the surrounding peaks are genuinely excellent.
Allow a good three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how much poking about you do. There's no café, no facilities, nothing really - bring what you need. It's free to visit, naturally, since it's open hill country.
If you're based at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd nearby, this makes a worthwhile afternoon or morning excursion, particularly if you're after something less travelled than the main Snowdonia honeypots. Fair warning though - the walk is exposed and weather changes fast. Not brilliant for small children or the reluctant.
