Lyme Valley Parkway

A stretch of river valley that actually rewards a proper wander, Lyme Valley Parkway sits on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent and gives you the sort of green breathing space you'd almost forgotten existed. It's a nature reserve, which means managed woodland, riverside paths, and genuine wildlife rather than manicured gardens - you'll spot birds, the occasional deer, and enough wildflowers in spring to make you forget the pottery factories are just over the hill.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths meander alongside the River Lyme, and you can cover a decent stretch in an afternoon without feeling like you've tackled Ben Nevis. Families with restless kids will find it manageable too - not exhausting, and there's water to look at which keeps them entertained. Birdwatchers should absolutely make the trip; the reserve attracts a proper range of species depending on the season.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and you can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to half a day here without rushing. Come in spring or early autumn when the undergrowth isn't overwhelming and the midges haven't staged their full invasion. Winter walks are actually lovely too - fewer people, clearer sight lines through the trees.
