Lydgett's Junction sits on the edge of Consett, a former steel town that's quietly reinventing itself. It's a railway junction - or rather, what remains of one - marking a point where industrial lines once converged to serve the ironworks that made this place boom. Walking around it now, you're looking at brick structures, overgrown platforms, and the ghost of something that mattered enormously to people who worked here.

It's not a visitor attraction in the theme-park sense. There are no gift shops, no interpretive boards, no café. What you get instead is a genuine piece of industrial heritage that hasn't been polished up for tourism, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want. History enthusiasts and industrial archaeology types will find it genuinely interesting - the bones of the place tell you something real about how the North East worked. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse after twenty minutes.

Best visited as part of a broader wander around Consett itself, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Allensford or Haystax. The town's had a rough ride since steel declined, but there's something honest about it. Allow an hour or so to look around properly. Go midweek if you can - weekends don't add anything, but quieter times let you actually think about what you're seeing. Free to visit, obviously. It won't blow your mind, but it won't waste your time either.
