Allensford Walk

The River Derwent cuts through a proper wooded gorge here, and that's the whole appeal of Allensford Walk. It's a straightforward riverside trail just outside Consett where the water churns over rocky shelves and the trees press in close enough that you forget you're anywhere near an ex-industrial town.

The walk itself isn't demanding - most people manage it in under an hour - but the path does climb and dip along the river's edge, so decent footwear matters. You get the sense of walking through something genuinely wild, even though it's been managed as a nature reserve for years. The wooded sections are dense in summer, which keeps things cool. Winter reveals more of the stone work and the river's force.

Walkers will find this worth the trip. Families with school-age kids will too, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. It's not a viewpoint destination - you're here for the river itself, the sound of it, the way the light filters through the canopy. Photography types get something decent if the light cooperates.

Staying at Allensford Holiday Park (it's barely half a mile away) makes this a natural morning outing before heading elsewhere. Manor Park and Haystax are close enough that you could slip away for an hour or two without it becoming a journey. The walk fills a gap nicely - not strenuous enough to dominate a day, but engaging enough that it's proper time outdoors rather than just killing an hour.
