Ludwell Valley Park

The valley drops away suddenly as you cross the footbridge at Ludwell, and that's when you realise why people bother with this corner of Devon at all. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you actually see things moving in the undergrowth rather than just reading a laminated sign.

Walks here snake through ancient woodland with the river doing its gentle thing below. The whole place feels quieter than you'd expect given how close Exeter sits just a few miles north. Birders tend to know it better than casual visitors, which means you won't be fighting through crowds, but you should bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting anything beyond the usual suspects.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore. The terrain's manageable - nothing that'll leave your calves screaming - though parts get muddy after rain. Families with younger kids will find it worth a visit, though there's no playground or facilities to speak of, so come prepared.

If you're based at Devon Heaven Hideaways or Castle Brake just down the road, this makes a solid morning out before heading back for lunch. The reserve doesn't charge admission as far as I can tell, which counts in its favour. Go early if the weather's decent - by afternoon the car park fills up with dog walkers, and the magic gets diluted.
