Luccombs Copse

Walk into Luccombs Copse and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through in green-tinted shafts and the ground squelches underfoot year-round. It's a modest patch of forest near Emsworth, the sort of place locals know but visitors stumble upon by accident, which is partly why it feels so peaceful.

The copse itself is straightforward: mixed deciduous woodland with decent walking paths that wind between oak, ash, and beech. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no faffing about - just trees and quiet. On a weekday morning you might not see another soul. Weekends bring more foot traffic, but even then it feels unpressured. The paths are relatively flat and well-trodden, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though it's damp in winter and muddy after rain.

Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding. The network isn't enormous - you can cover the main routes in ninety minutes - but the woodland atmosphere is authentic, not landscaped or managed to within an inch of its life. Bird watchers should bring binoculars; the mix of habitat attracts decent numbers, particularly in spring migration.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing from Bow Hill Farm caravan site, just six miles south. The drive takes ten minutes, and you can be under the trees with a coffee thermos before the crowds arrive. Not a sweeping vista or Instagram moment, but if you're after genuine woodland without the National Trust car park theatre, this delivers.
