Lowtown Fort

The earthworks at Lowtown Fort sit on raised ground just outside Larne, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What you'll find is a properly preserved Iron Age fort - two concentric rings of banks and ditches that once enclosed a settlement, now grown over with grass and the odd stunted tree. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of poking about, especially if you've got an interest in how people actually lived two thousand years ago rather than just reading about it in a museum.

The site itself takes maybe twenty minutes to walk around properly, though you could spend longer if you're the sort who likes to stand in the middle of an old fort and imagine what it was like. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards worth mentioning - just the landscape and your own head filling in the blanks. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on the ground unless they're already keen on archaeology. Walkers and history types will get far more from it.

Larne's close enough for supplies, and Down to Earth Wild Camping sits just four miles away if you're doing a broader tour of County Antrim. The fort works well as a quick stop if you're already in the area visiting other sites - don't make a special journey from elsewhere, but if you're based locally it's worth an hour of your time.
